Great Web Design Can Boost SEO

web design boost seoHave you ever thought that your web design has a real affect on your SEO?

Perhaps it seems a little far-fetched to you. Maybe you even doubt it. I have no idea.

But what you need to understand is that your website plays a huge role in your SEO results, and where you appear in the search engines, so let us have a look at what you can do.

Responsive Design

Google is heavily focused on the user experience and how many people visit a site and don’t stay for very long.

So if you are wanting to keep your visitors as long as possible, you have to make sure that they are happy on whatever device they are using.

These days, people are surfing the web on an ever expanding range of devices. From mobile phones, tablets, laptops and computers, to the forthcoming wearable gadgets and internet of everything.

The number of gadgets is only increasing so you need to plan ahead.

And the only way that you can do that is to make sure that your website is flexible.

Today, flexible websites are using responsive design. These types of design are capable of changing with the size of the screen they are displayed on.

So when a user opens your website on the iPhone it displays in a smaller, narrower version. Which means it is easy to use, easy to read and makes the user happy.

The result is that Google is happy too.

They can your site and see that it is mobile friendly. So they rank it higher, especially for mobile search.

It also means that users will use the site more and stay longer, which is also something they measure.

The overall results is then higher ranking through better SEO!

Site Load Speed and Web Hosting

There are many things you can do to improve the load times of your pages and site, and again all of these things have an affect on SEO.

For many of the same reasons as the mobile websites, faster sites keep customers from hitting the back button and make them enjoy being on your website.

The result is again that Google is happier with you site and more likely to rank you higher on SERP.

The first thing you need to be careful of is where you host your website.

There are many cheap web hosting companies and you don’t want to fall into the trap of trading money for speed.

It is for this reason that although I think some of the cheaper companies like Blue Host and Dream Host are ok, I would use something like Siteground.

One of the biggest things you can do to improve your site load speed is to keep the web design simple.

The less things you have on the page and the smaller they are, the faster it will load.

So when you are tempted to add video or large images to your site, please have a serious think about the benefits before you lose massive speed advantages.

In fact if you want to test your site load speed when you do such changes, check it with tools such as:

And on Pingdom make sure you take the settings that use the closest server to your customers, or at worst you.

When I talk about not including large things on your site, of course we mentioned visuals. But this also includes files like scripts (which can be included with WordPress plugsin) and advertising.

So again be careful what you add to your site.

Although everyone focuses on link building and on page SEO elements when thinking about SEO there are many other things you should think about.

Hopefully the above ideas have given you food for thought when you are developing or improving your next website.

Importance Of Web Design in SEO

Not everyone understands what an influence web design has on SEO.

In fact they are so strongly coupled together that I wanted to go over them in detail in this post.

I have also consulted with a few companies to get this information including Web Design Zürich.

But back to the point, let’s break down all the elements of web design that have an affect on SEO.

Page Load Speed

page load speeds - faster than a bulletGoogle favours sites that are fast.

Why? Because customers will not wait for websites to load, so Google will not put sites at the top of their search results that take a long time to load.

So when you are optimising your webste, you need to seriously think about website load speed for your SEO. But when you think about it, you are also making your future customers happy too, when they finally land on your website.

There are a number of tools that you can use to test how well your site is doing, but here are a few to get you started:

So take a look at these tools and see how your site goes. I would aim for a load speed of under 4 seconds, 2 is perfect, and then move on to the next problem.

Website Navigation

It is also extremely important that your users can find all of your content, even your older blog posts. And Google likes this as well.

So one of the things that you want to be doing is displaying your older content in as many different places as makes sense.

You might want to create navigation that highlights your best categories or content. Or you might want to display this information in the sidebar in related or recent posts. Showing the categories is also another option.

Graphics and Images

Another thing that customers and Google love is including images in all of your content.

The world has moved into a visual phase, and you have to move with them.

So make sure that you include images in all of your blog posts (2 or 3 if they are longer and it makes sense(. Make sure these images are as unique as possible too. It is not always easy, but with so many duplicates used form stock imagery, Google is happier if you use your own.

Another great thing about images is that Google handles them in a separate search. So if you tag your images correctly (alt, title and image name) they will also rank them in image search and you could also be found there too

Videos on Site

Video can also be very useful and help you rank well. But images alone can be enough. Try both though.

The reason that video is so great is that Google owns Youtube. So they favor the use of Youtube videos. Whether you create one on your account or use another one in your blog posts.

Either way, video is helpful in your web design in some fashion or another.

Remember, the video does not have to be a documentary, but just a few minutes long and it is enough.

You can even use animation services like Animoto to do the work for you. But if you have enough skill and a good camera, it is preferable to make your own videos.

So when you are thinking about your website and SEO, you have to take the big picture into account at all times. This means designing and thinking about your site with both in mind, and not just how sexy your design is.
